An Interactive Whiteboard can be though of as being four presentation tools in one. It can be used as a traditional whiteboard, projector screen, electronic copyboard or when using it's full potential by connecting it to your projector and computer as an interactive whiteboard.
Its only when used as an interactive whiteboard that its true potential can really be appreciated.
Effectively you use your projector to project the image on your computer's monitor onto the interactive whiteboard surface. Everything you can see through your computer monitor will now be displayed on your whiteboard and instead of controlling your computer through a mouse you can control the cursor by touching the surface with your finger or by touching the surface with a special pen, depending on the technology used by the white board.
You can think of a whiteboard in interactive mode as effectively a massive touch screen monitor, but one that, by using software on your PC allows you to draw with virtual ink over your screen, you can then to capture your notes for later. This process allows you to do any of the following :-
- Save lessons to give to students who were absent
- Brainstorming ideas from students
- Take notes directly into PowerPoint presentations
- Use the highlighter tool to highlight nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc.
- Illustrate and write a book as a class. Use the record feature to save the text.
- Diagramming activities such as flowcharts.
- Teaching the steps needed to solve a maths problem or equation.
Please note that when using any interactive whiteboard as a traditional whiteboard you should only use the same 'dry erase markers' as you would with any dry wipe whiteboard.
